What is the Day Master? Understanding the Character That Represents You in Four Pillars
The first concept anyone new to Four Pillars divination should understand is the 'Day Master' (日干/Ilgan). The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of your birth day — the character that represents 'you' in your Four Pillars chart. Among all eight characters in your chart, the Day Master plays the most central role, serving as the reference point from which your personality, talents, and fortune are interpreted through its relationships with the other seven characters.
The Day Master is determined by one of the 10 Heavenly Stems: Gap (甲), Eul (乙), Byeong (丙), Jeong (丁), Mu (戊), Gi (己), Gyeong (庚), Sin (辛), Im (壬), and Gye (癸). Each carries unique personality traits and energy. Gap-Wood (甲) is like a tall tree — upright with natural leadership. Eul-Wood (乙) is like grass — flexible and adaptable. The strength of your Day Master also matters significantly.
