The Ten Gods system classifies the relationships between the Day Master (you) and the other seven characters in your Four Pillars chart. Its roots trace back to Yin-Yang and Five Elements theory from China's Han Dynasty, and it was formalized into its current form when Xu Ziping of the Song Dynasty established the Day Master-centric interpretation system. The word 'God' (神/shin) doesn't refer to supernatural beings but to the energy and role each relationship carries. For example, 'Sik-sin (Food God)' represents the energy of abundance and nourishment, while 'Jeong-gwan (Proper Authority)' symbolizes social order and honor.

How to Identify Your Ten Gods

To determine your Ten Gods, you first need to know your Day Master (日干). The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of your birth day — the character that represents 'you' in your Four Pillars. Once your Day Master is established, each of the remaining 7 characters is classified based on its Five Elements relationship to your Day Master.

For example, if your Day Master is Gap-Wood (甲木): Same Wood elements become Bi-gyeon (same polarity) or Geop-jae (opposite polarity). Fire elements you generate become Sik-sin or Sang-gwan. Earth elements you overcome become Pyeon-jae or Jeong-jae. Metal elements that overcome you become Pyeon-gwan or Jeong-gwan. Water elements that generate you become Pyeon-in or Jeong-in.
